Perhaps it’s time to rename this section of the blog. Out with “Car Keys”, in with “Truck Keys.”
Light trucks recorded their 60th consecutive month of year-over-year gains in volume, fueling auto sales to an any-month high pace that exceeded 17.7M units.
Wards Auto reported a SAAR of 17.72M, Auto News came in at 17.81M. Make no mistake, the real story here was not just the continued growth of the market, but the role of light trucks (pickups, SUVs, and especially CUVs). Lost in the details: the fact that 98% of passenger car segments actually contracted in volume versus August 2014, even as a decade-long peak was set.
One more very important note: Last year, Labor Day weekend sales numbers were included as part of August 2014’s final tally. That wasn’t the case in 2015, as Labor Day is late this year.
